The Convention on the Rights of the Child sets out the rights of children up to the age of 18 years of age.

Adolescents and youth have the right:

  • To expect all adults to do what is best for them
  • Adults should act in the best interests of adolescents and youth
  • Adults should think about how decisions will affect adolescents and youth
  • Adolescents and youth have the right to know and live with parent(s) who care for them unless it is bad for them to do so
  • In some cases, children might live with members of the extended family or community, or legal guardians
