The high-level event “World Hepatitis Day 2026: Breaking down barriers to accelerate hepatitis elimination” will be convened on World Hepatitis Day to mobilize political leadership, strengthen partnerships, and advance progress towards ending viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. Organized by the Government of Brazil and the World Health Organization (WHO), the event will provide a platform for dialogue on expanding access to hepatitis prevention, testing, and treatment services and addressing barriers that continue to hinder progress.
Despite the availability of effective vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments, viral hepatitis remains a leading cause of liver disease and liver cancer, causing thousands of preventable deaths every day. Financial constraints, stigma and discrimination, weak health-system integration, and inequitable access to innovation continue to leave millions without care. Reflecting the World Hepatitis Day theme, “Hepatitis: Let’s break it down,” the event will bring together ministers, policymakers, technical experts, civil society, affected communities, and development partners to identify actions to increase investment, strengthen service delivery, expand equitable access, and accelerate innovation.
The event will seek to elevate hepatitis elimination on the global health agenda by increasing its political visibility and positioning it as a priority within universal health coverage, primary health care, and sustainable development efforts. It will reinforce the need for sustained leadership, accountability, and financing to achieve the 2030 elimination targets and ensure that no one is left behind.
The High-level commemoration will take place on the sidelines of AIDS 2026, the 26th International AIDS Conference.
